Description:
Obeticholic Acid 5 mg is a semi-synthetic bile acid analog used for the treatment of Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) in adults, particularly in those who have an inadequate response to or are intolerant of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). It acts by activating the farnesoid X receptor (FXR), which plays a crucial role in regulating bile acid synthesis and secretion.
By modulating FXR, Obeticholic Acid reduces the production and accumulation of toxic bile acids, decreasing liver inflammation and fibrosis, and improving overall liver function. The 5 mg dose is often used as the starting dose, especially in patients with hepatic impairment.
