Description:
Racecadotril 100 mg is an antisecretory antidiarrheal medication used for the symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea in adults and adolescents. Unlike traditional antimotility agents, Racecadotril works by reducing intestinal hypersecretion without affecting intestinal motility.
It is a prodrug that is rapidly converted to its active form, thiorphan, which inhibits the enzyme enkephalinase. This leads to increased levels of endogenous enkephalins that reduce the secretion of water and electrolytes into the intestine, effectively controlling diarrhea.
Racecadotril provides rapid relief from watery stools, with fewer side effects such as bloating or constipation when compared to opioids like loperamide.
